Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2′ has already made $32 million in the box office and it’s not even out yet! ‘Eclipse’ made $30 million in midnight showings! Twi-hards are you upset?
Wow — Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 hasn’t even hit theaters and it is already breaking records. It’s no surprise to any Harry Potter fan that the final installment is generating as much buzz as it has this week, yet now movie ticket sales have confirmed it. More than 6,000 midnight showings have sold out prior to Thursday night’s big release and now, theaters are adding 3:00 a.m. showings, because fans need to see the movie as soon as possible! And we don’t blame them!
NYpost.com reports that this is the largest number of pre-sold tickets ever! Ticket service Fandango confirms this unbelievable sales streak, and even put it in simpler terms: 93% of all tickets on Thursday are tickets to see Harry Potter at midnight. Incredible!
The last movie that generated as much buzz and midnight-showing mania was the latest Twilight movie, Eclipse. So far, Harry Potter is several million over Twilight’s record for midnight showings sales. In terms of previous midnight showing ticket sales, Eclipse made $30 million, New Moon made $26.3 million and Twilight opened with a little over $7 million. Still something to be proud of for sure.
To be fair, Twilight still has two more movies to go in the franchise, and this is the end of the ‘Potter’ era, which has spanned ten years and appeals to a wider fan-base, but it has turned into quite a showdown!
We will just have to wait and see what happens when The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 is released this fall.
